Connie K. Ho for RedOrbit.com

The benefits and drawbacks of cannabis have long been discussed in the medical community. And now, a new study looks at how cannabis can affect the pain of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.

Many patients of MS report to have spasticity, which is a condition that makes their muscles tight and difficult to control. There are some drugs that are available, but many of these treatments tend to not show improvement in patients conditions. The report, recently published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, states that smoking cannabis could help reduce muscle tightness and pain for MS patients. However, smoking cannabis could also have negative cognitive effects.

In the experiment, researchers from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), held randomized, double-blinded controlled trials with 30 participants. They hoped to better understand if smoking cannabis could affect muscle spasticity for patients who werent able to respond to other treatments. Scientists rated the spasticity of patients joints on the Ashworth scale, which has commonly been used to look at the intensity of muscle tone. The results of the project showed that pain scores decreased by 50 percent and that the participants who smoked cannabis showed a one-third decrease in the Ashworth scale, which was 2.74 points on a base scale of 9.3.

Overall, spasticity in patients improved compared to a placebo group in the experiment. In the group of participants, 63 percent were female, the average age was 50, 20 percent used wheelchairs, and more than half the participants needing walking aids. This experiment differed from past projects in that it looked at the impact of smoked cannabis instead of oral cannabis.

We saw a beneficial effect of smoked cannabis on treatment-resistant spasticity and pain associated with multiple sclerosis among our participants, noted Dr. Jody Corey-Bloom, a researcher of the Department of Neuroscience at UCSD, in a prepared statement. Although generally well-tolerated by our participants, smoking cannabis was accompanied by acute cognitive effects.

Participants were also asked to perform an additional test with focused attention. The test showed that cognitive function was affected negatively by the group of participants who smoked cannabis. The mild effects on attention and concentration as well as increased fatigue proved to be short-term.

Using an objective measure, we saw a beneficial effect of inhaled cannabis on spasticity among patients receiving insufficient relief from traditional treatments, stated the authors in summarizing their research. Although generally well-tolerated, smoking cannabis had acute cognitive effects. Larger, long-term studies are needed to confirm our findings and determine whether lower doses can result in beneficial effects with less cognitive impact.

Researchers believe that more studies need to be done to confirm their findings to see if lower doses of smoking cannabis can have positive results, but with less of a cognitive impact.

The majority of people with MS experience cognitive changes at some point in their lives, remarked Dr. Nicholas LaRocca, vice president of health care delivery at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) and a non-affiliate of the study, in an interview with MSNBCs Rachael Rettner. We dont want to add any additional cognitive deficits with treatment.

SEBASTIAN Toby, a 6-year-old golden retriever, loves to run and play catch. And Oreo, a 12-year-old border collie mix, also is a bundle of energy.

Movement for both dogs got easier about a month ago when they received a revolutionary stem cell treatment at the Highlands Animal Hospital.

Veterinarian Marcus Kramer performed the successful transplant procedures, which were developed by Kentucky-based MediVet-America.

Both dogs had been in significant pain with a restricted range of motion, as shown on X-rays.

“It’s made a big difference,” said Kramer. “The really amazing thing is that they both healed so quickly. Both dogs had problems with their hips and were suffering from osteoarthritis. Just 30-days later, they are able to walk and run again.”

Adult animal stem cell technology uses the pet’s own regenerative healing power to treat dogs, cats and horses suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia and tendon, ligament and cartilage injuries. Under anesthesia, Kramer removed about 40 grams of fat from each dog and separated the stem cells from the fat. He then activated the stem cells under an LED light, and injected them back into the dogs.

Stem cell therapy allows an animal to get off pain and anti-inflammatory drugs, Kramer said. MediVet-America’s therapy is done entirely at the animal hospital in about three hours, and costs about $1,800 for dogs and $2,400 for horses. That compares to thousands of dollars that pet owners could expect to pay for medication over a pet’s lifetime.

Erica Kent, a spokesman for MediVet-America, said using the LED light is integral to the patented-process, because the light helps to awaken stem cells and makes them more active. The three-color light stimulates millions of dormant cells to initiate repair from the moment the cells are injected into the animal’s body, according to the MediVet-America website.

The company is also offering a program that allows pet owners to bank stem cells when animals are younger to use if their pet develops illnesses like arthritis in old age.

    STEM CELL THERAPY

People with multiple sclerosis may find that smoked cannabis provides relief from muscle tightness spasticity and pain, although the benefits come with adverse cognitive effects, according to a new study published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

Many patients with multiple sclerosis suffer from spasticity, an uncomfortable and disabling condition in which the muscles become tight and difficult to control. While there are drugs to relieve spasticity, they can have adverse effects and do not always sufficiently improve the condition in some patients.

Researchers from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, conducted a randomized, double-blinded controlled trial with 30 participants to understand whether smoked cannabis can have an effect on muscle spasticity in people whose spasticity does not respond well to existing treatment. The average age of participants was 50 years, and 63% were female. More than half of the participants needed walking aids, and 20% used wheelchairs.

Most trials have focused on the effect of oral cannabis rather than smoked cannabis.

Rather than rely on self-reporting by patients regarding their muscle spasticity a subjective measure health professionals rated the spasticity of each participant’s joints on the modified Ashworth scale, a common objective tool to evaluate intensity of muscle tone. The researchers found that participants in the smoked cannabis group experienced an almost one-third decrease on the Ashworth scale 2.74 points from a baseline score of 9.3, meaning spasticity improved, compared with the placebo group. As well, pain scores decreased by about 50%.

“We saw a beneficial effect of smoked cannabis on treatment-resistant spasticity and pain associated with multiple sclerosis among our participants,” writes Dr. Jody Corey-Bloom, Department of Neuroscience, University of California, San Diego, California, with coauthors. “Although generally well-tolerated by our participants, smoking cannabis was accompanied by acute cognitive effects.”

Cognitive function was negatively affected in the smoked cannabis group but not with placebo, as measured by the ability to perform an addition test requiring focused attention. These effects were short term.

“Using an objective measure, we saw a beneficial effect of inhaled cannabis on spasticity among patients receiving insufficient relief from traditional treatments,” conclude the authors. “Although generally well-tolerated, smoking cannabis had acute cognitive effects. Larger, long-term studies are needed to confirm our findings and determine whether lower doses can result in beneficial effects with less cognitive impact.”

SAN DIEGO A clinical study of 30 adult patients with multiple sclerosis at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has shown that smoked cannabis may be an effective treatment for spasticity a common and disabling symptom of this neurological disease.

The placebo-controlled trial also resulted in reduced perception of pain, although participants also reported short-term, adverse cognitive effects and increased fatigue. The study will be published today (May 14) in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Principal investigator Jody Corey-Bloom, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurosciences and director of the Multiple Sclerosis Center at UC San Diego, and colleagues randomly assigned participants to either the intervention group (which smoked cannabis once daily for three days) or the control group (which smoked identical placebo cigarettes, also once a day for three days). After an 11-day interval, the participants crossed over to the other group.

“We found that smoked cannabis was superior to placebo in reducing symptoms and pain in patients with treatment-resistant spasticity, or excessive muscle contractions,” said Corey-Bloom.

Earlier reports suggested that the active compounds of medical marijuana were potentially effective in treating neurologic conditions, but most studies focused on orally administered cannabinoids. There were also anecdotal reports of MS patients that endorsed smoking marijuana to relieve symptoms of spasticity.

However, this trial used a more objective measurement, a modified Ashworth scale which graded the intensity of muscle tone by measuring such things as resistance in range of motion and rigidity. The secondary outcome, pain, was measured using a visual analogue scale. The researchers also looked at physical performance (using a timed walk) and cognitive function and at the end of each visit asked patients to assess their feeling of “highness.”

Although generally well tolerated, smoking cannabis did have mild effects on attention and concentration. The researchers noted that larger, long-terms studies are needed to confirm their findings and determine whether lower doses can result in beneficial effects with less cognitive impact.

The current study is the fifth clinical test of the possible efficacy of cannabis for clinical use reported by the University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR). Four other human studies on control of neuropathic pain also reported positive results.

“The study by Corey Bloom and her colleagues adds to a growing body of evidence that cannabis has therapeutic value for selected indications, and may be an adjunct or alternative for patients whose spasticity or pain is not optimally managed,” said Igor Grant, M.D., director of the CMCR, which provided funding for the study.

Additional contributors include Tanya Wolfson, Anthony Gamst, Ph.D., Shelia Jin, M.D., MPH, Thomas D. Marcotte, Ph.D., Heather Bentley and Ben Gouaux, all from UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Marijuana may ease the symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), a new study says.

Smoking pot can relieve muscle tightness, contractions, pain and other disabling symptoms related to the advance multiple sclerosis in patients.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine studied 30 patients with those who were given marijuana had a 50 percent decrease in pain, reported the Toronto Star.

Those given marijuana also had a decrease in spasticity or contractions related to MS.

By Amy Norton NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – People with multiple sclerosis have long said that smoking marijuana helps ease their painful muscle cramping. And a new clinical trial suggests they are not just blowing smoke. The study, published Monday, found that for 30 MS patients with muscle “spasticity,” a few days of marijuana smoking brought some relief. But the big caveat, researchers say, is …

(CBS News) Smoking marijuana may provide relief from multiple sclerosis symptoms, a new study suggests. People with MS who smoked pot reported less pain and spasticity – or muscle tightness – but it came at the expense of their cognitive abilities, the study found.

Medical marijuana? Montel Williams impressed by Israeli approach Marijuana mouth spray seeks FDA approval as painkiller PICTURES – Medical marijuana: Which 16 states permit pot?

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, spasticity refers to the stiffness and involuntary muscle spasms that are indicative of the disease. It can range from mild spasticity, which may feel like tightness, to severe spasticity, which produce painful sudden movements of the extremities, typically the legs, although it can occur in any limb.

For the new study, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine enlisted 30 participants to see whether smoked marijuana could impact the spasticity in people who don’t respond to existing treatments. Participants were an average age of 50, more than half were female, and more than half needed walking aids (20 percent used wheelchairs); they were randomly assigned to smoke marijuana or a placebo.

Typically marijuana studies use a synthetic marijuana pill, such as dronabinol (Marinol) to test the effect of the drug’s active ingredient, THC, tetrahydrocannabinol. This study, published in the May 14 issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, sought to see if smoking marijuana made a difference.

The researchers found participants in the smoked cannabis group experienced on average a one-third decrease in score as measured by a spasticity test called Ashworth scale, compared with participants given a placebo.

“It’s a modest effect,” Corey-Bloom told HealthDay of the point reduction. “It also reduced the patients’ perception of pain,” she added, with a 50 percent decrease in perceived pain.

Montel Williams has been an outspoken advocate of medical marijuana to relieve pain caused by MS since he was diagnosed with the disease in 1999, HealthPop reported.

While marijuana showed benefits for plasticity, it apparently made participants perform worse on a test that measured cognitive function and focused attention, compared with those in the placebo group.

“Although generally well-tolerated by our participants, smoking cannabis was accompanied by acute cognitive effects.”

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(Marketwire -05/14/12)- VistaGen Therapeutics, Inc. (OTC.BB: VSTA) (VSTA.OB), a biotechnology company applying stem cell technology for drug rescue, today issued the following letter to its stockholders and the investment community from its CEO, Shawn Singh.

    To our valued Stockholders:

Since becoming a public company one year ago, we have progressed to perhaps the most exciting time in our company’s 14-year history. To arrive at this point, more than $45 million, obtained through various strategic collaborations, investments and grant awards, has been carefully employed. We believe our pluripotent stem cell technology platform, Human Clinical Trials in a Test Tube, combined with the network of strategic relationships we have announced, will allow us to secure additional capital and the large market drug rescue opportunities that can deliver value to our stockholders.

Since the beginning of the year, our team has carefully reviewed our Top 10 drug rescue opportunities and narrowed our focus to our Top 5 candidates. Now we intend to launch our initial drug rescue program and secure strategic capital necessary to support it, as well as launch our second drug rescue program by year-end. We also are working on validation of LiverSafe 3D, our bioassay system for drug rescue involving liver toxicity and drug metabolism issues, for launch during the first half of next year.

The pharmaceutical industry continues to face extremely high barriers in bringing new medicine to market. The number of drugs approved by the FDA over the past decade has dropped precipitously, by over 50%, in spite of staggering increases in resources devoted to R&D by pharmaceutical companies. Based on the progress we have made with CardioSafe 3D and our efforts to build our strategic drug rescue ecosystem of collaborators, we believe our core business model — to use our stem cell technology and strategic relationships to develop less toxic variants of drugs that have already been proven in vitro to be effective — is now more commercially promising than at any other point in our history. We believe we will be able to help major pharmaceutical companies avoid the loss of years of time and millions of dollars spent in developing new therapies that have positive efficacy data, but must be discontinued due to later discovery of unsafe toxicity levels for human heart and liver tissue.

Over the past year, we have secured additional intellectual property protection and entered into strategic relationships with leading biotech firms and academic researchers to support development of our stem technology and our drug rescue-based commercialization initiatives:

Over the next 12 months, we have an ambitious agenda to work closely with our advisors and collaborators to secure capital and achieve these transformative milestones:

Our goals are reachable, with strategic financing. We believe we have the right technology, intellectual property, development teams and specialized focus to deliver on our founding mission — “putting humans first” — bringing clinically relevant human biology to the front end of the drug development process, long before standard animal and human testing, and using better cells to make better medicine.

We would like to thank our partners, advisors, employees and each of you, our loyal stockholders, for helping support us in our efforts to deliver long-term value for you.

    Sincerely,

DENVER, May 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Regenerative Sciences, Inc., a company dedicated to advancing orthopedic care through non-surgical adult stem cell procedures, today announced that it has secured a $2M investment from philanthropist, visionary and businessman John C. Malone, PhD, chairman of Liberty Media Corporation. In addition to advancing Regenerative Sciences’ clinical and lab-based stem cell research, the investment will help support the national expansion of their Regenexx Physician Network.

Regenerative Sciences’ Regenexx procedures utilize a patient’s own stem cells to help repair a broad range of common injuries and degenerative conditions, including cartilage lesions, torn ligaments and tendons, osteoarthritis and bulging spinal discs. For many, the procedures offer a viable alternative to arthroscopic surgery, open-joint surgery, or joint replacement surgery. Regenexx patients experience little or no downtime from the procedures and avoid the lengthy rehabilitation period associated with most surgical procedures.

“We are proud of our accomplishments in the field of regenerative interventional orthopedics and it’s exciting that our work has drawn the attention of such a noted entrepreneur and philanthropist,” said Christopher J. Centeno, M.D., Chief Executive Officer of Regenerative Sciences. “Dr. Malone shares our vision for forging the next generation of minimally invasive regenerative treatments. This investment will not only bolster our existing stem cell research programs and make our procedures available in all regions of the U.S., but it will help us maintain a leadership role in clarifying the regulatory space for physician stem cell use.”

Regenerative Sciences is at the forefront of regenerative orthopedic medicine within the United States and the company is bringing the future of orthopedic treatments to patient care today.

    About Regenerative Sciences

Regenerative Sciences is an outgrowth of the Centeno-Schultz clinic, where we are reinventing orthopedic care for the 21st century using key biologics such as stem cells, next generation tools and devices, and unique therapeutic approaches. Our signature initiative, Interventional Orthopedics, allows doctors to treat orthopedic conditions through injection, rather than traditional invasive surgery. The Regenexx Physician Network brings together like-minded physicians from around the country to offer more patients access to our innovative procedures.

    DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/lffnp7/stem_cell_research) has announced the addition of the “Stem Cell Research Products: Opportunities, Tools & Technologies 2012 (Updated)” report to their offering.

Stem cells are primitive cells found in all multi-cellular organisms that are characterized by self-renewal and the capacity to differentiate into any mature cell type. Several broad categories of stem cells exist, including embryonic stem cells, derived from blastocysts; fetal stem cells, obtained from aborted fetuses; adult stem cells, found in adult tissues; cord blood stem cells, isolated from umbilical tissue; dental stem cells, derived from deciduous teeth; cancer stem cells, which give rise to clonal populations of cells that form tumors or disperse in the body; and animal stem cells, derived from non-human sources.

In a developing embryo, stem cells can differentiate into all of the specialized embryonic tissues. In adult organisms, stem and progenitor cells act as a repair system for the body, replenishing specialized cells. Of interest to researchers is the potential for use of stem cells in regenerative medicine to treat conditions ranging from diabetes, to cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders. Additionally, the ability to use stem cells to improve drug target validation and toxicology screening is of intense interest to pharmaceutical companies. Stem cells are also being studied for their ability to improve both the understanding and treatment of birth disorders.

To facilitate research resulting from interest in these far-ranging applications, a large and growing stem cells research products market has emerged. Large companies selling stem cell research products include Life Technologies, BD Biosciences, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and Millipore, although dozens of other suppliers exist as well. Products offered by these companies include: antibodies to stem cell antigens, bead-based stem cell separation systems, stem cell protein purification and analysis tools, tools for DNA and RNA-based characterization of stem cells, stem cell culture and media reagents, stem cell specific growth factors and cytokines, tools for stem cell gene regulation, a range of stem cell services, tools for in vivo and in vitro stem cell tracking, and stem cell lines.

This report explores current market conditions and provides guidance for companies interested in developing strategically positioned stem cell product lines.

Featured elements of this report include:

    – What are novel stem cells research products that can be developed?

    – What stem cells types are most frequently used by research scientists?

    – Which species of stem cells do scientists prefer and what are the factors driving this preference (access, pricing, funding, handling advantages)?
